Teen Killer Revealed as Judge Lifts Reporting Ban in Newcastle Murder Case
14-Year-Old Found Guilty of Fatal Stabbing
Leighton Amies, just 14 at the time, was found guilty of murder by a Newcastle Crown Court jury. He denied murder, claiming he picked up the knife for “reassurance” and never intended to kill Tomasz.
Judge Lifts Reporting Restrictions
Mr Justice Spencer lifted the reporting ban after the verdict, allowing Amies’ identity to be made public. The move shines a light on this tragic case, highlighting the devastating impact on Tomasz’s family and friends.
The judge stressed the decision was aimed at deterring young people from carrying knives. “This kind of behaviour leads to needless injury, pain, and death,” he said.
Deadly Park Brawl Ends in Tragedy
The court heard Amies was walking through a park with his girlfriend when a group of youths followed them. A fight broke out, during which Amies pulled out a serrated kitchen knife he had grabbed from home for “reassurance.”
He stabbed Tomasz deep in the chest, fatally wounding him. After the attack, Amies reportedly boasted, “I’ve wetted your boy.”
Defense Claims ‘Extreme Duress’ — Prosecution Hits Back
Amies’ lawyer, Peter Makepeace KC, said the teen didn’t seek trouble and acted under extreme duress. But the prosecution argued that Amies intended serious harm, resulting in a needless loss of life.
The jury convicted Amies of murder, attempted grievous bodily harm, and carrying a blade. Sentencing is set for June.
