Brutal Pensioner Attack: Woman Jailed for Over Seven Years

A ruthless thug has been locked up for seven-and-a-half years after launching a “sickening and brutal” attack on an 87-year-old pensioner in Birmingham.

Terrifying Home Invasion in Bartley Green

Samantha McDonnell broke into supported accommodation on Hasbury Road, Bartley Green on 4 March. She forced her way into the pensioner’s flat, demanded cash, and savagely attacked him, knocking him to the floor. To stop him from calling for help, McDonnell even unplugged the victim’s phone.

The vulnerable elderly man was hospitalised with serious injuries – a broken nose and a bleed on the brain. Though he has been released, the trauma has left him so frightened he’s had to move to a new home.

Stealing from the Vulnerable

  • McDonnell targeted three people in total at the property: two pensioners and a support worker.
  • She was caught the very next day at her flat in Bartley Green.
  • Police found stolen property and the clothes she wore during the attack in her flat.
  • She even tried to use one victim’s stolen bank card.

Damning Evidence Seals Her Fate

The 37-year-old drug addict tried to deny involvement, but DNA evidence proved otherwise. She was also spotted on CCTV close to the scene and identified by three witnesses in an ID parade.

Faced with overwhelming evidence, McDonnell pleaded guilty. At Birmingham Crown Court on 28 April, she was sentenced to seven-and-a-half years in prison for theft, robbery and burglary. She must serve at least two-thirds of her sentence before release is considered.

Justice for the Victim

While addiction may explain McDonnell’s actions, it is no excuse for brutalising a vulnerable elderly man. Our thoughts remain with the pensioner as he continues to recover from this horrific ordeal.
