Glass Factory Chaos as Molten Lava-like Glass Leak Sparks Huge Emergency in Harlow
Emergency crews have been battling a scorching incident at a glass making factory in Harlow since the early hours of Wednesday morning. A furnace leak spilled molten glass, creating a dangerous and intense heat hazard that required rapid response and road closures.
Inferno at Edinburgh Way: Road Closed
The drama unfolded at 2:16am on Edinburgh Way, where 13 fire appliances, including teams from Harlow and Old Harlow, rushed to the site alongside water bowsers, command units, and drones. To keep the firefighters safe, Edinburgh Way remains shut. Drivers and pedestrians are urged to avoid the area wherever possible.
Firefighters Battle Molten Glass in Scorching Conditions
Assistant Chief Fire Officer James Taylor revealed the brutal challenge: “Our firefighters are working really hard in incredibly difficult conditions to cool molten glass, which has leaked from a furnace. The heat is so intense we’ve had to rotate crews constantly. That’s why so many appliances were on scene initially. We aim to scale back operations soon.”
Early fears were this crisis could drag on for days. But thanks to relentless teamwork between firefighters and expert site staff, the molten glass load has been dramatically reduced from 340 tonnes to just 15 tonnes.
Ongoing Safety Efforts and Environmental Precautions
As of 11:30am, the emergency has been scaled down to six crews who will remain on site monitoring the situation for several more hours. The fire service is working alongside the Environment Agency to safely manage any polluted water resulting from the incident.
ACFO Taylor added: “Specialists on site have been amazing in helping us bring this to a swift conclusion. We now hope to wrap things up later this afternoon. Thanks to local residents and staff for their patience while Edinburgh Way remains closed.”
