A Northumbria Police officer has been sent down for 27 months after causing a pensioner’s death by dangerous driving. PC Mark Roberts was responding to an emergency when disaster struck.

Red Light Tragedy in Gateshead

Roberts ran a red light on Dunston Road, Gateshead, smashing into a motorcycle carrying a married couple. The impact threw both Ronald and Muriel Pinkney into the air, leaving them seriously injured.

74-Year-Old Muriel Dies, Husband Severely Injured

Tragically, 74-year-old Muriel Pinkney died in the July 8, 2022 crash near the Metrocentre. Her husband Ronald, then 77, survived but suffered multiple fractures.

Guilty Verdict and Sentencing

In February, Roberts, 57, from Darlington, was found guilty of causing Muriel’s death by dangerous driving and also guilty of causing serious injury to Ronald. Today, the Teesside Crown Court jailed him for 27 months.
