Inside the £650K Fraud at Transport for London
A 38-year-old HR employee at Transport for London (TfL) has been locked up for nearly four years after masterminding a huge tax rebate scam. Luciana Akanbi exploited her access to confidential staff records — including passport numbers, National Insurance details, and bank info — to pull off a £650,000 fraud.
Couple Targeted Over 100 Colleagues
Working with her husband, Femi Akanbi, 51, from Dartford, Kent, the couple submitted 139 fake tax rebate claims to HMRC between September 2021 and January 2022. They pocketed roughly £433,000 from the public purse before getting caught.
Judge Calls It TfL’s ‘Worst Ever’ Data Breach
At Woolwich Crown Court, the judge slammed the pair’s offence as the “worst ever” data breach in TfL’s history. Both Luciana and Femi Akanbi were sentenced to three years and nine months behind bars, bringing their audacious crime spree to an end.
