Sad news from the world of British TV as Elsie Kelly, famed for her role as Noreen Maltby on ITV’s hit sitcom Benidorm, has passed away aged 89.

Creator Derren Litten Pays Heartfelt Tribute

Derren Litten, the brain behind the show, took to X to mourn the loss. He said:

“So sad to pass on the news of the passing of Elsie Kelly aka Noreen in Benidorm. One of the best loved characters in the show and certainly one of the most beloved cast members. Elsie’s acting abilities and comic genius were so natural they were almost taken for granted.” “For someone who initially auditioned for the role of Madge (and gave an excellent reading of the part), her personality and natural warmth encouraged me to build up the part of Noreen from one or two lines in the first two episodes (initially intending to lose the character by the end of the first series) to many episodes and many series, culminating in her playing Noreen’s own twin, Doreen in series 10.” “Thanks for your talent but most of all your friendship Elsie, I am very sad today but also happy to think of such a wonderful life well lived.”

More Than Just Noreen: A Rich Career on Screen and Stage

Elsie’s career stretched far beyond Benidorm. She appeared in cult UK series Brookside, had guest roles in Skins and starred in the 1996 adaptation of The Famous Five. Her impressive TV portfolio covered both drama and comedy. But it was in the theatre where Elsie truly shone. A Liverpool stage favourite, she wowed audiences with her comedic chops in numerous touring productions across the UK. Fans and fellow performers alike will remember Elsie Kelly as a warm, naturally gifted actress whose wit and charm lit up every role she played. A true star of British entertainment, she will be dearly missed.
