A 73-year-old man has been locked up after causing a devastating explosion inside his home in Mere, Wiltshire. Martin Clayton doused his living room in petrol and set it ablaze, triggering an explosion that shattered the quiet early hours.
Neighbours Raise Alarm, No Injuries Reported
The blast woke nearby residents, who quickly alerted emergency services. Police, fire crews, and ambulance teams rushed to the scene. Clayton was found unharmed inside the wrecked property, now deemed unfit and needing a complete rebuild.
Three Years Behind Bars for Reckless Arson
Initially pleading not guilty, Clayton changed his plea just before his trial. Salisbury Crown Court sentenced him to three years and one month for arson, being reckless as to whether life was endangered.
“The actions of Mr Clayton were incredibly dangerous and put not only his own life but those of his neighbours and the attending emergency services at risk,” said DC Martyn Powell. “Thanks to the swift response from neighbours and emergency teams, no one was hurt. The seamless cooperation between police, fire, and ambulance services highlights their professionalism and bravery.”
Emergency Services Praise and Ongoing Support
Area Manager Ant Bholah from Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue emphasised the crucial teamwork that kept the community safe. Support continues for everyone affected, including the property owner facing financial and emotional hardship. This harrowing incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by reckless behaviour and the heroic efforts of emergency responders who risk their lives to protect others.
