A Loving Mum, Jo Shaw, died after a deliberate explosion ripped through a house in Frenchay, Bristol. The tragedy occurred at 6.30am on Sunday as armed officers were en route following a reported domestic incident. Jo managed to send her young son outside moments before the blast, saving his life. The incident has been treated as a homicide by Avon and Somerset Police.

Heroic Act Saves Son

Neighbours revealed Jo instructed her child to play on a trampoline outside just before a powerful explosion shattered the home on Sterncourt Road. The child and two other family members suffered minor injuries and have since been discharged from the hospital.

Ex-partner Linked To Blast

Police say Jo’s ex-partner, Ryan Kelly, 41, who has a criminal history, forced entry into the property and set off an explosive device inside. Kelly was previously jailed for involvement in a high-profile drug gang. The couple had a history of domestic incidents, and police have referred the case to the watchdog.

Emergency Response Escalation

First responders attempted CPR on Jo at the scene before explosive ordnance disposal teams arrived. Due to safety concerns, medical staff had to step back while bomb specialists secured the area. The British Army’s disposal team also assisted in the investigation.

Investigation Underway

Officers are currently examining another property in Speedwell linked to Ryan Kelly as the investigation continues. Police say they are not seeking anyone else in connection with the case at this early stage.

Community Mourns Loss

Friends and neighbours described Jo as a devoted mother trying to rebuild her life after moving into her parents’ home to escape her ex-partner. Tributes highlight her bravery and the shock felt by the community.

“Joey was a wonderful woman who would always do anything for you. Our community is absolutely devastated,” a neighbour said.

Superintendent Matt Ebbs said: “Jo’s death has been officially recorded as a homicide. We are not looking for anyone else in connection with her death. Our thoughts are with her devastated family, who are receiving specialist support.”
