Tradesman Impostor Caught: Preys on Elderly in Hythe and Dover
A 61-year-old fraudster who conned his way into homes by pretending to be a tradesman has been jailed for three years. Stuart McAllister, from Sandwich, carried out a string of distraction burglaries targeting vulnerable elderly residents between April and June 2024.
Distraction Burglaries Uncovered
McAllister claimed he was inspecting insulation and testing for damp to gain entry. Once inside, he swiped valuable jewellery and collectibles, some of which he later sold at pawn shops. His devious antics didn’t go unnoticed.
Kent Police launched a swift investigation after several victims came forward in June and July 2024. CCTV footage linked McAllister to the break-ins. Officers arrested him on his houseboat, discovering stolen jewellery and rare coins stashed away.
Three-Year Prison Sentence Delivered
In August 2024, McAllister confessed to three counts of burglary at court and was locked up pending sentencing. On January 10, 2025, Canterbury Crown Court handed down a hefty three-year prison term.
Detective Chief Inspector Keith Taylor warned: “McAllister presented himself as a reliable and trustworthy tradesman, betraying the trust of his victims to steal items of both monetary and sentimental value. His actions have not only caused distress to those directly affected but also undermined the trust people place in legitimate tradespeople.”
Police Urge Public to Stay Alert
Kent Police have issued vital advice to help residents avoid falling prey to doorstep criminals:
- Ask for ID: Always check identification and verify it independently with the company.
- Probe Callers: Genuine tradespeople will answer your questions without fuss.
- Don’t Rush: Arrange visits for when friends or family can be present.
- Stay Safe: Call 999 if you feel threatened or suspicious.
