Three men have been jailed following an extensive British Transport Police (BTP) investigation into a string of high-value luggage thefts at London’s St Pancras and King’s Cross railway stations. The sentencing at Inner London Crown Court on 19 June saw Faysal Benoumechiara, 27, of Greenwich, handed two years and three months, while Abdel Aitkebir, 35, and Medhi Fatih, 41, both of no fixed address, received sentences of two years six months and two years four months respectively. These convictions relate to multiple thefts involving suitcases filled with valuables over an 11-month period.
Organised Theft Spree
The court heard how on 16 October 2025, a family arriving on the Eurostar at St Pancras had two suitcases worth over £ 600,000 stolen. As the luggage was being loaded into a taxi, Aitkebir distracted the driver while Fatih and Aitkebir executed the theft. CCTV footage showed them scouting the area beforehand. Photos of stolen jewellery were found on Fatih’s phone.
Repeated Thefts From Trains And
Faysal Benoumechiara was found guilty of five separate luggage thefts, including stealing from passenger suitcases on trains travelling between King’s Cross and Peterborough and between Morpeth and King’s Cross. He also targeted parked cars by distracting drivers or taking advantage of brief moments when the owners were away from their luggage.
Swift Arrests at King’s Cross
On 4 November, plainclothes BTP officers observed suspicious activity at King’s Cross and arrested Benoumechiara alongside three others—Samy Legouini, Mohamed Koulai and Amine Bennari—who had just stolen a backpack. The stolen bag was recovered, including a laptop and phone belonging to the victim. All three pleaded guilty and received nine-month sentences.
Additional Sentences For Attempted Theft
Yacine Chenite, 38, was also arrested on 16 October after being linked to an attempted suitcase theft from a car at St Pancras on 12 October. Unable to remove the case, Chenite fled but later pleaded guilty and was sentenced to nine months’ imprisonment.
Police Praise Investigation
The British Transport Police highlighted the importance of vigilance and said their investigation successfully dismantled a coordinated group targeting rail passengers. The sentences send a strong message that such thefts will be met with firm justice.
