Nine Met cops hailed heroes after daring rescue at blazing Euston hostel.
Fire Rips Through Five-Storey Hostel
Chaos erupted in the early hours of Saturday, February 8, when a ferocious fire tore through a five-storey hostel in Euston, home to around 20 residents, including tourists. Thick smoke billowed from the basement, filling the entire building and trapping people inside.
Brave Officers Battle Smoke to Save Lives
The Metropolitan Police were first on the scene. Without waiting for backup, officers plunged into the smoke-choked basement to rescue confused and trapped residents. They calmly guided survivors to safety, battling intense smoke and flames.
- Sergeant Pete Day grabbed fire extinguishers to slow the blaze.
- Constable Luke Uzzell smashed into smoke-filled rooms searching for trapped victims.
- Other team members scoured upper floors, helping injured people and directing evacuations while London Ambulance paramedics waited to give urgent care.
Chief Praises Exemplary Courage
Commander Peter Stevens lauded the officers’ fearless actions. He said:
“Each and every day Met officers put their lives in danger to protect the public and keep the communities they serve safe. The actions of these officers were outstanding and exemplify the very best of the Met. Without a thought for their own safety, they stepped into danger and showed exemplary courage. I’m thankful that nobody was seriously injured, and this is no doubt due to the heroic actions of our brave officers.”
