East London Man Sentenced for Spreading Extremist Content Online

East London Man Sentenced for Spreading Extremist Content Online

A man with two previous terror-related convictions has been sentenced to prison for disseminating extremist content online. The proactive investigation by the Metropolitan Police Service (Met) led to the arrest and subsequent charges against Shafi Saleem, aged 34, a resident of east London.

In July 2022, Saleem posted Daesh propaganda footage on one of his private social media channels, depicting a series of suicide bombings. Law enforcement officers were able to secure evidence of this post. Following an extensive inquiry by the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command, Saleem was apprehended on February 14, 2023, upon his return to the UK via a flight from Pakistan, landing at Heathrow Airport. He was formally charged the next day.

Detective Chief Superintendent Hayley Sewart, who heads the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command, emphasised the gravity of extremist content online:

“Extremist content online can cause serious harm in communities, particularly to young and other vulnerable people, and it is often intended to radicalise and recruit individuals to terrorist causes. That is why we work diligently to identify those who disseminate such material and strive to have it removed from websites.”

Saleem’s history of terror-related offences underscores the importance of stringent measures upon release from prison:

“Terrorism offenders always have conditions imposed upon them when they re-enter communities, aiming to minimize the risk of reoffending and safeguard the public. The fact that this is the second time Saleem has breached these conditions highlights the strict enforcement by the police.”

In a recent trial at the Old Bailey, Saleem was found guilty of dissemination of a terrorist publication (under Section 2 of the Terrorism Act 2006). Additionally, he had previously pleaded guilty to breach of a part 4 notification requirement under the Counter Terrorism Act 2008 (related to possession of an additional/unregistered SIM card) and using threatening words to cause alarm (under section 4A of the Public Order Act 1986), pertaining to his behavior during arrest.

Saleem’s sentencing will occur at a later date.

Trial Resumes in Kai McGinley Murder Case Following Unexpected Delays

Trial Resumes in Kai McGinley Murder Case Following Unexpected Delays

The trial of seven men accused of murdering Kai McGinley in Erith has restarted after a two-week break due to the death of a barrister and a fire at the Old Bailey.

The trial came to a sudden halt on Tuesday, January 30, with the news that Robert Woodcock KC, who was lead counsel defendant Jalees Selby-Gangera, died that morning.

Gillian Jones KC and Tom Forster KC, heads of Red Lion Chambers, said: “It was a great privilege to have known and worked with Bertie.

“He will be fondly remembered not only as an exceptional advocate but also as a cherished friend and colleague.”

Sally O’Neill KC stepped in as leading counsel for Selby-Gangera and the trial was ready to resume last Wednesday morning (February 7).

However, the Old Bailey was evacuated after a loud bang was heard and black acrid smoke billowed from an electrical substation near the rear of the building.

Inside the Old Bailey, lights flickered and dimmed, and some of the 18 courtrooms suddenly descended into complete darkness just as cases were getting under way shortly after 10am.

The Old Bailey re-opened after checks were completed on Monday (February 12), but the trial could not resume due to a juror’s illness.

The trial will resume today (Tuesday, February 13) with a forensic pathologist due to give evidence about Kai’s death.

‘Targeted execution’

Prosecutor Brian O’Neill KC has told the jury that 24-year-old Kai was shot dead in a “planned and targeted execution which was almost certainly drugs related”.

He said Kai was with his friends, Bill Burton and Norman Samura, in a stolen white Mini which had false plates.

They were rammed off the road by a Land Rover. Some or all of the occupants of that car, as well as a Peugeot which was behind it, jumped out and opened fire, he said.

“Four or five shots were fired from two shotguns at close range one of which fatally wounded Kai McGinley. They then fled the scene,” Mr O’Neill said.

Family of Teen Stabbing Victim Slams Lack of Remorse from Killers

Family of Teen Stabbing Victim Slams Lack of Remorse from Killers – UKNIP

The family of a teen who was brutally stabbed to death in a Penge park have slammed his killers’ lack of remorse.

Michael Jonas, 17, was lured to Betts Park then stabbed to death on November 2, 2017.

In November 2023, after a six year wait for justice, six men were found guilty of Michael’s murder.

Michael had been approached by five of the group as he walked down Anerley Road, before all walking into the park together.

Just three minutes later, all of the defendants were seen fleeing the park on bicycles.

The fatal attack had taken no more than 120 seconds.

Police say none of the group ever admitted responsibility or provided any reason for their actions, however the court heard that they had believed Michael was a ‘snitch’.

‘Nobody should have to bury their child’

Victim impact statements written by Michael’s family were read at the Old Bailey on Monday (February 5).

Michael Jonas Senior, Michael’s dad, said: “Listening to the details in court about how my son was brutally killed will stay with me for the rest of my days.”

He said he was on the Number 3 bus in Crystal Palace on his way to meet Michael to put up some furniture when he got a call from his daughter.

She then passed the phone to a police officer, who said: “Mr Jonas, I’m sorry but Michael is no longer with us.”

“I then had to organise my first funeral, which was for my child,” Mr Jonas said. “Nobody should have to bury their child first. It is my death sentence.”

By early December 2017, all six defendants had been arrested and charged.

But the case was dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) early the following year.

In October 2022, the CPS agreed to reinstate the original charges and the men were all found guilty of murder in November 2023/

He told the Old Bailey that during that time he had handed out leaflets and put out appeals to try to get justice.

Mr Jonas thanked a “brave” witness who came forward and revealed how his son had died.

‘Michael was loved by everyone’

Michael’s mum said: “The night the police came to tell me my son had been murdered in the park, I passed out.

“I could not believe this was the same park I had been taking Michael to since he was young, and now he was lying on the floor dead.

“No words can explain the pain and hurt.”

She said: “Not a day goes by when I don’t think about him. I miss him so much.

“Michael was loved by everyone. He was someone who liked to be by himself, he didn’t want anyone to tell him what to do or control him.

“He was a talented young man with goals and morals.

“He was taken from us in the cruellest way and I hope we get justice.”

Michael’s sister said: “I don’t even know where to start. No words can explain how I feel losing my older brother, life is not the same anymore.”

Michael’s killers will be sentenced at the Old Bailey.

They are:

• Nyron Jean Baptiste, 22, of Queen Adelaide Road, Penge
