Man Arrested in Ilford Woman’s Murder Probe

A 29-year-old man was hauled in on Monday afternoon, June 27, suspected of killing a woman in Ilford. He remains in custody as detectives race to crack the case.

Police Confirm Victim as Zara Aleena

Chief Superintendent Stuart Bell, head of East Area policing, revealed the tragic victim is believed to be 35-year-old Zara Aleena, a local woman. The brutal attack happened early Sunday morning, June 26, around 2:44am on Cranbrook Road near Gants Hill Station.

“Zara suffered serious head injuries and sadly died despite heroic efforts by paramedics and hospital staff,” said Chief Supt Bell. “It appears she was attacked by a stranger.”

Investigation in Overdrive

  • The Met’s Specialist Crime Command is leading the murder investigation.
  • Officers are scouring CCTV, conducting house-to-house inquiries, and carrying out forensic examinations at the scene.
  • Police have appealed for anyone who was in the Cranbrook Road area between 2am and 3am Sunday – especially those with dashcam footage – to come forward.
  • They also want to hear from anyone who noticed suspicious behaviour in Ilford over the weekend.

Community Reassurance & Call for Information

Chief Supt Bell urged the public to stay vigilant but calm. “We are focusing on keeping the local community safe and will keep residents updated as we identify those responsible.”

He added: “Women should never have to alter their behaviour out of fear. We encourage anyone feeling threatened or spotting anything suspicious to report it immediately.”

Support is being given to Zara’s family during this devastating time. Police thanked the community for their patience and said neighbourhood officers will be out speaking with locals in the coming days.

Anyone with information should contact the major incident room on 0208 345 3715 or report anonymously to Crimestoppers.
