Tragedy at Chalkwell Park: A seven-year-old girl has died and a six-year-old remains critical after a huge tree collapsed on children playing in Southend-on-Sea, Essex.

Deadly Tree Collapse in Chalkwell Park

The horror unfolded at around 3pm on Saturday when a large tree partially fell in Chalkwell Park. Two young girls, aged seven and six, were caught underneath the falling branches along with several other children. Emergency teams rushed to the scene as paramedics treated five injured kids. Sadly, the older girl later died in hospital. Three other children escaped with minor injuries.

Massive Emergency Response

The East of England Ambulance Service confirmed they were called at 2.55pm. Six ambulances, three officer vehicles, plus two air ambulances from Kent and Essex swiftly attended.

“We were called at 2.55pm to reports that a tree had fallen in Chalkwell Park. Six ambulances, three ambulance officer vehicles, the 1 Air Ambulance and Kent Air Ambulance were sent to the scene.”

Police Launch Full Investigation

Essex Police are probing what caused the tree to collapse. There is no word yet if weather, structural failure, or other factors triggered the disaster. Chief Superintendent Leighton Hammett spoke of the shock felt by families and witnesses alike.

“Families are facing unimaginable hardship this evening. I cannot put into words how difficult today has been. Many bystanders went from enjoying the sunny day to rushing to help without hesitation.”

“Emergency services did everything they could. Today’s loss is one they will all take personally.”

Community in Mourning

Southend MP David Burton-Sampson expressed heartfelt sympathy:

“The death of one of the children at Chalkwell Park is truly devastating. I send deepest condolences to the child’s family and friends. My thoughts are also with the injured children and I wish them a full recovery.”

Park Safety Checks Underway

Authorities have cordoned off the scene. Forensic teams and council inspectors are investigating, with plans to check other trees for safety risks. Police urge locals to avoid the area and contact Essex Police on 101 with information, referencing ChalkwellPark28/06.
