Hampshire Gritters Hit the Roads as Freeze Set to Bite

Hampshire County Council is ready to tackle the freezing cold tonight. Gritter lorries will patrol priority one salting routes across the North, Central, and South regions, starting from 8 p.m. sharp. Temperatures are plunging below freezing, so expect icy roads ahead.

Arctic Blast Brings Snow and Wintry Showers

An arctic maritime airmass is sweeping over the UK, prompting multiple weather warnings. The cold snap could unleash wintry showers and snow, especially on higher ground and coastal areas. Tonight will stay dry with clear spells, but clouds will thicken from the north.

  • Minimum temperature: 1°C
  • Brisk northerly breeze in Kent
  • Frost likely inland by dawn

Cold and Frosty Week Ahead

Wednesday looks cloudy and dry, with the odd sunny spell in the south and west. A lone shower may hit the Kent coast, with highs only reaching 6°C. From Thursday to Saturday, expect bitterly cold nights with widespread frost and low daytime temps. Though mostly dry, isolated showers may cause slippery icy patches — watch out on Saturday.

Into Sunday and beyond, this icy spell will linger, particularly up north. Coastal areas face wintry showers and occasional snow at low levels. Inland is set for crisp, dry weather, but frosts will be sharp and severe at times. Cloud, rain, and strong winds could sweep the southwest, bringing the threat of significant snowfall on the leading edge of front systems. Temperatures stay well below average, though the south may warm slightly later on.

Health and Safety Warnings Issued

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has declared a Level 3 Cold Weather Alert across England from Wednesday evening to Monday, December 12. Dr Agostinho Sousa from UKHSA warns: “Cold weather can have serious consequences for health. Older people and those with heart or lung conditions are particularly vulnerable.”

Advice includes keeping your home at a comfy 18°C, especially in living rooms and bedrooms. Close bedroom windows at night and wear multiple layers to stay warm.

Drivers Urged to Prepare for Winter Roads

RAC spokesman Rod Dennis says drivers may be caught out by the sudden chill after a mild autumn. “Check your tyres for proper inflation and tread, top up oil, coolant, and screen wash, and ensure your battery is up to scratch,” he advises. “Take a 20-minute drive now if you have an older battery to boost its resilience. Always carry a fully charged phone and a blanket in case of breakdowns.”

The cold snap will likely drag on through next week, keeping temperatures well below normal for December. Time to wrap up warm and take extra care on the roads!
