Escaped Detainees from Yarl’s Wood Riot Apprehended in London

Four men who escaped from the Yarl’s Wood detention centre during a riot last April have been apprehended in London, authorities have revealed.

The escape occurred on April 28, 2023, when a total of 13 detainees fled the notorious detention centre in Bedfordshire. Exploiting the chaos of the riot, they made their way through an outside door in the sports hall before breaching three fences and dispersing across the country.

Recent developments have seen all 13 men sentenced to over 21 years in jail, with four of them located and arrested in the London area.

Enea Shima, 28, was apprehended by Metropolitan Police officers on May 3 at an address in Bromley, southeast London. Bilbil Bodini, 27, was tracked down to an address in Hendon, northwest London, where he was arrested on May 7.

Luftin Hallaci, 21, surrendered himself at Romford Police Station on May 9, while Rizah Koka, 29, was taken into custody outside a coffee shop in Colindale, northwest London, on May 4. During Koka’s arrest, police uncovered a significant cache of illegal substances and cash at an associated address.

Koka received a five-year sentence, which included an additional six months for escaping lawful custody, in December at Luton Crown Court. Bodini and Hallaci were sentenced to eight months each for the escape, while Shima received a six-month jail term.

Detective Chief Inspector Matt Inwood remarked, “This was a dangerous and brazen escape attempt by men who were awaiting deportation. Thousands of hours have been spent by our Bedfordshire officers and staff, as well as law enforcement colleagues across the country, in order to apprehend those who escaped. This behavior was completely unacceptable and a flagrant breach of the law.”
