A man who set fire to a convenience store full of people in Grimsby in an unprovoked attacked was sentenced to three years behind bars following his court appearance last Friday.
Steven Caldwell, aged 49, of Tunnard Street in Grimsby was charged with arson following the incident and appeared at Grimsby Crown Court for sentencing on Friday 23 June.
On Tuesday 24 May 2022, Caldwell entered the Nisa convenience store on Victor Street in Grimsby at around 1.30pm.
Unbeknown to other shoppers, Caldwell had set bags of BBQ charcoal alight, smiling up at the CCTV camera, he then proceeded to throw paper onto the charcoal that he had stashed in his pockets and fled the shop.
DC Andrew Taylor leading the investigation said: “Luckily staff were promptly alerted to the fire and were able to extinguish it before anybody was seriously injured.
“This was a reckless attack and I hope that the outcome of the court case provides members of the community with the reassurance that we are there, in your communities, to support and take swift and positive action against those responsible for serious offences and bring them to justice.”
