Widower on the Run After Tragic Killing

Harshita Brella, 24, was found dead in a silver Vauxhall Corsa on Brisbane Road last November 14. Her widower, Pankaj Lamba, 23, is now the subject of a nationwide manhunt. Police believe he fled to India after the murder charge was authorised. The couple formerly lived in Sturton Walk, Corby.

Strangled Close to Home Before Body Moved

Northamptonshire Police revealed Ms Brella was likely strangled in Corby on the evening of November 10. Horrifically, her body was then driven over 100 miles to Ilford, where she was discovered days later.

Domestic Abuse Warnings Ignored

  • Ms Brella reported domestic abuse by Lamba to police on August 29, 2023.
  • Lamba was put on police bail and hit with a domestic violence protection order but allowed to go free.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has opened a serious investigation into how Northamptonshire Police handled the case. The watchdog claims two detective constables failed to properly review or act on the domestic abuse reports. Supervisory officers — a sergeant and chief inspector — also face gross misconduct claims for slacking on oversight and risk assessments.

IOPC Demands Justice and Reform

“This is a harrowing case in which a young woman was killed not long after arriving in the UK to start a new life,” said IOPC director Derrick Campbell.

“Our thoughts remain with Ms Brella’s family and friends. After a thorough investigation, four officers now face disciplinary proceedings.”

The IOPC says it’s up to Northamptonshire Police to carry out the disciplinary hearings. In the meantime, the watchdog recommends urgent improvements within the force’s domestic abuse unit to prevent future tragedies.
