Widower on the Run After Brutal Killing of Young Woman
Harshita Brella, just 24, was found dead in a silver Vauxhall Corsa on Brisbane Road on November 14. Her widower, 23-year-old Pankaj Lamba, is now the target of a nationwide manhunt. Police suspect he fled to India shortly after being charged with her murder. The couple once lived together in Sturton Walk, Corby.
Strangled Near Home, Body Dumped Over 100 Miles Away
Northamptonshire Police revealed Harshita was most likely strangled in Corby on the evening of November 10. In a chilling twist, her body was then driven more than 100 miles to Ilford, where she was found days later.
Domestic Abuse Warnings Ignored Despite Early Reports
- Harshita reported domestic abuse by Lamba to the police on August 29, 2023.
- Lamba was put on police bail and hit with a domestic violence protection order — but was still allowed to roam free.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has launched a serious probe into Northamptonshire Police’s handling of the case. The watchdog accuses two detective constables of failing to properly review or act on the abuse reports. Meanwhile, a sergeant and chief inspector face gross misconduct claims over lax oversight and risk assessment failures.
IOPC Demands Justice and Urgent Police Reform
“This is a harrowing case in which a young woman was killed not long after arriving in the UK to start a new life,” said IOPC director Derrick Campbell.
“Our thoughts remain with Ms Brella’s family and friends. After a thorough investigation, four officers now face disciplinary proceedings.”
The IOPC stresses that Northamptonshire Police must lead the disciplinary process. Meanwhile, urgent changes are recommended within the force’s domestic abuse unit to stop any repeat of this tragic failure.
