A community is in mourning after 15-year-old Pharrell Garcia was fatally stabbed in a suspected botched robbery on Wednesday. The incident occurred in the vicinity of Benthal Primary School in Hackney, where Garcia had previously attended. The teenager was reportedly picking up his younger sister from school when he was attacked near a block of flats next to the school grounds.
The Metropolitan Police have confirmed that a 15-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of murder following the attack that took place around 4 PM yesterday. According to friends of the victim, Garcia had been visiting a friend in the area and was about to leave on a rented Lime bike when the assailant attempted to rob him. The altercation escalated quickly, resulting in Garcia being struck on the head and stabbed in the lungs.
Residents and eyewitnesses recounted the horrific scene where Garcia, after being stabbed, tried to flee but collapsed. Local residents rushed to perform CPR, but despite their efforts and the arrival of paramedics who attempted resuscitation, Garcia succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The area, known for being a tight-knit community where children frequently play together, has been left shocked and frightened by the incident. One mother expressed her fear for her children’s safety, noting the traumatic impact the event had on her young daughter who witnessed the aftermath.
The crime scene was cordoned off by police, with forensic tents set up and Lime bikes seized as part of the investigation. Detective Chief Superintendent James Conway stated that the police are conducting thorough house-to-house inquiries, reviewing CCTV footage, and speaking to potential witnesses as part of their investigation.
This stabbing is the second youth homicide in London this week, following the shooting death of Rene Graham at a family event in Ladbroke Grove. Conway emphasized the devastating impact of knife crime on the community, stating, “No one should have to lose a child… It tears families apart and robs our children of their futures.”
The police are appealing to anyone who was in or near Stellman Close at the time of the incident to come forward with any information they may have. As the investigation continues, a heightened police presence is expected in the area in the coming days.
