UK Passports Ranked Among Worst in Europe for Value for Money

The UK passport has been ranked as one of the worst in Europe in terms of value for money, following a recent price increase. New research reveals that the UK passport has dropped in rankings due to its higher cost compared to other European countries.

According to the latest Passport Value Index, compiled by digital PR agency Tank, the UK passport has slipped from 31st to 35th place globally. This decline comes after a 7% price hike in April, raising the cost from £82.50 to £88.50. The UK passport, valid for 10 years, allows access to 192 visa-free countries at a cost of £8.85 per year, which represents 2.68% of an average monthly salary.

In comparison, several European countries offer passports at significantly lower prices with similar or better access to visa-free travel. For instance:

  • Spain: £25.80 for a 10-year passport with access to 194 countries.
  • Germany: £60.21 for a passport with access to 194 countries.
  • France: £73.97 for a passport with access to 194 countries.
  • Ireland: £64.51 for a passport with access to 193 countries.

These countries not only offer access to one or two more visa-free countries than the UK but also provide a more economical option for their citizens.

The UAE tops the global rankings for passport value. Emirati citizens can obtain a 10-year passport for just £10.82, which grants access to 184 visa-free countries, making it the best value passport worldwide.

Maxine McCreadie, a personal finance expert at UK Debt Expert, commented on the findings: “With over half of Brits planning a foreign holiday this year, passport applications will be a top priority and many may be left surprised at the price. Households are already battling the rising cost of living and the cost of passports, plus the 10% increase in holiday prices, could put a stop to travel plans. The UK passport has become one of the priciest in Europe, especially compared to countries like Spain, which offers better access to countries for £62.70 less.”

The Passport Value Index highlights the disparity in costs and access among different nations, emphasizing the relatively high cost of the UK passport compared to its European counterparts. As the cost of living continues to rise, this could have a significant impact on British travelers’ plans and their ability to explore visa-free destinations.

For those looking to renew their UK passport, it remains important to stay informed about the costs and ensure they budget accordingly for their travel plans.
