Paul McArthur launched a terrifying assault on his partner at their home in Otley Terrace, Darlington, in the early hours of May 31. Neighbours witnessed the horror and tried to step in.
Neighbour Tries to Help – Ends Up Seriously Injured
When a passer-by stopped to help, McArthur smashed their mobile phone in a rage. Then he grabbed a large kitchen knife and stormed into the street. He chased one of the men before stabbing him in the back, puncturing his lung.
McArthur fled the scene but later handed himself in. Police tracked him down after a social media appeal on their Facebook page.
Six Years Behind Bars for Brutal Attack
McArthur, 39, was charged with wounding with intent, assault by beating, criminal damage, and threatening with a bladed weapon. He pleaded guilty at Teesside Crown Court and was sentenced to six years in jail.
Detective Constable Stewart Walker, who led the investigation, said: “The victim suffered a serious injury just for trying to be a Good Samaritan and stop an assault from escalating.”
“He required hospital treatment but thankfully will make a full recovery. I’m pleased McArthur is behind bars. Hopefully, this brings some comfort to the victim, knowing the attacker is off the streets and can’t hurt anyone else.”
