Nearly 16,000 COVID Cases Missed in Data Glitch

A technical fault wiped 15,841 COVID-19 cases from the official counts between 25 September and 2 October. The blunder, now fixed, means daily figures reported during this period were seriously understated.

Officials Speak Out on the Data Disaster

Interim Public Health England (PHE) Chief, Michael Brodie, revealed the error happened during the overnight data transfer on 2 October. He said:

“A technical issue was identified overnight on Friday 2 October in the process that loads positive COVID-19 results into the reporting dashboards. After a rapid investigation, we found 15,841 cases had not been included.”

“Most of these missed cases were from the most recent days.”

“Everyone who tested positive was notified normally and advised to self-isolate.”

NHS Test and Trace alongside PHE acted fast to fix the glitch and have since transferred all outstanding cases to the tracing system.

“Huge thanks to contact tracing and health teams for their hard work over the weekend.”

“We understand this will cause concern and have now introduced tougher checks to stop a repeat.”

Tracing Expert Assures Public With Key Details

Susan Hopkins, NHS Test and Trace and PHE Joint Medical Advisor, added:

“Our analysis shows 15,841 cases were affected between 25 September and 2 October, mostly piling up in the last few days of that period.”

“Over 75% (11,968) relate to 30 September to 2 October.”

“Test result notifications were not impacted—everyone received their results as usual.”

“These errors didn’t affect decision-making around local COVID measures last week.”

“By 1am on 3 October, all missing cases were loaded into contact tracing, with priority given to urgent follow-up.”

“The advice remains clear: if you test positive, self-isolate immediately for 10 days and cooperate fully with NHS Test and Trace.”
