Driver High on Class A Drug Kills 10-Year-Old Crossing Road

Fatal Crash in Rochester

Gavin Prodger got behind the wheel of his Audi on Saturday, 10 July 2021, after taking a class A drug. Moments later, at around 6.50pm on Watling Street, he struck 10-year-old Lily Lockwood as she crossed the road to meet friends at the local park.

CCTV footage showed Lily had carefully checked for traffic before stepping out. She was rushed to hospital but tragically died from her injuries.

Multiple Offences Revealed

At the scene, Kent Police officers made Prodger complete a roadside impairment test, which he failed badly. He was arrested immediately.

Serious Collision Investigation Unit officers uncovered more damning facts: Prodger was driving at 47mph in a 30mph zone, had defective eyesight, and was using his mobile phone to send a photo just seconds before the crash.

Harsh Sentence and Life-Altering Bans

Tests conducted while Prodger was in custody confirmed he was under the influence. On Monday, 23 October 2023, he was sentenced to at least eight years behind bars before parole eligibility. After release, he faces an additional two years on licence.

He’s banned from driving until 2040 and his Audi has been officially forfeited.

Police Warn: Driving Drugged and Distracted Can Kill

Detective Constable I Berridge said: “Prodger’s decision to drive that day cost a young child her life and left a family in mourning.

“Not only was he under the influence of class A drugs, he was speeding, had defective eyesight, and was using his phone. These reckless choices severely impaired his driving, putting everyone at risk and ultimately causing a tragic collision.”

“This sentence should warn others about the dangers of drugged or drunk driving. Selfish actions can have horrific consequences. I hope Lily’s family finds some closure knowing the driver is now behind bars.”
