A20 Roundhill Tunnel Shut After Massive Diesel Spill
Chaos hits Kent’s A20 coastbound as National Highways slam the brakes on traffic. The Roundhill Tunnel is shut tight following a major diesel spill. Specialist cleanup crews are racing to clear the mess and reopen the crucial route.
Where’s the Trouble?
The shutdown hits the stretch between the M20/A259 near Folkestone and the A260 near Hawkinge. The closure came into force on Tuesday, January 6. Officials warn drivers to brace for delays and stick to diversion signs.
Follow the Detours or Get Stuck
- Heading eastbound? Follow the hollow circle diversion sign.
- Exit the M20 at junction 13.
- Take the A259 Churchill Avenue east to the A260 Canterbury Road roundabout.
- Then onto the A260 north, before rejoining the A20 coastbound at Spitfire Way roundabout.
National Highways advises: “If this closure impacts your planned route, please allow extra journey time. Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or delay your trip.”
More Kent Road Hassles Coming
The tunnel will reopen once it’s safe, but drivers aren’t out of the woods yet. Expect more closures looming on vital Kent routes this week, including the M2, M20, A2, A282, and M25. Stay sharp and plan your journeys carefully.
