Olawale Hassan, 33, from Falcon Avenue, Grays, was locked up on Tuesday (6 October) for a brutal attack in Westcliff back in February 2017.

Victim Breaks Silence to Urge Other Survivors: Call the Police

The victim, who wishes to remain anonymous, has shared her powerful message to other survivors of rape. She urges anyone affected to report the crime immediately. “No matter how much you doubt yourself or blame yourself, please, please call the police as soon as possible. Don’t be afraid to,” she said.

She stressed how critical it is for police to collect evidence quickly after the assault. “I was terrified, traumatised, and alone when I got home. I didn’t want to phone the police because I was scared they wouldn’t believe me and I blamed myself for getting in the car with him.”

Police and Support Services: Lifeline in Darkest Hours

Thanks to the encouragement of her mum’s best friend, she made the call that day. “I gave the police all my clothes and didn’t wash until the next day so they could send me to the Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC). It was horrific but they were kind and apologetic – evidence is crucial.”

She paid tribute to 1 for their ongoing support and belief. “They offered counselling to help me cope, which I needed even though at the time I felt I couldn’t talk about it.”

Long Road to Justice: Persistence Pays Off

Waiting over three-and-a-half years for her case to reach court was incredibly tough. “It was tempting to bury my head in the sand and quit because you think no one will believe you. But I kept going for my own safety and to stop this evil man from hurting others.”

She added, “Essex Police did everything to collect evidence and bring my case to trial. I’ll be forever grateful.”

Message of Hope for Survivors

Though she remains traumatised, the victim wants other survivors to find strength and trust in the justice system. “There is light at the end of the tunnel if you report it. You have a chance to be believed.”

Her final advice: “If you’ve been raped, phone the police immediately. They are there to help and support you. Please be strong. Thank you again to Essex Police.”
