Pet Blackmailer Nabbed After Preying on Heartbroken Owners
A heartless blackmailer who exploited pet owners’ worst nightmares has been locked up for 3 years and 8 months. 24-year-old 1 Woolveridge from Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, scammed grief-stricken dog and cat owners by claiming he had their missing pets—then demanded cash for their “safe return.”
Mocked Owners and Threatened Beloved Pets
Woolveridge took advantage of social media pleas from desperate owners. He lied, told them he had their animals, and threatened to kill or harm the pets unless he was paid up. Some victims handed over hefty sums—one woman even sent him £1,000, only to hear Woolveridge laughing, boasting: “Now I can buy a new car.”
His cold-blooded threats included:
- Demanding £1,000 with threats to kill a dog if payment wasn’t made.
- Claiming he’d use a victim’s female dog for breeding and the owner would never see it again.
- Threatening to shoot a missing dog if the phone was put down without a £1,000 payoff.
Operation Façade Cracks Case, Over 200 Targets Identified
Police launched Operation Façade after spotting a pattern in missing pet reports nationwide. Their investigation led to Woolveridge’s arrest and his admission of nine blackmail charges, with 73 more offences considered.
Detective Inspector Amanda Sykes said:
“Woolveridge preyed on people devastated by the loss of their pets. He tore hope away by scaring them into paying money for pets that didn’t even exist. We thank the victims for their brave support. Seeing him in court hopefully brings some justice.”
She warned pet owners:
“Don’t send money without verifying the claim. Ask for video calls or fresh photos to confirm it’s your pet. If in doubt, don’t pay and contact police immediately.”
Victims Speak Out: “Physically Sick and Humiliated”
The damage wasn’t just financial. Victims revealed deep emotional scars:
- “I was shaking and shivering uncontrollably… he mocked me and I felt humiliated.”
- “Being scammed made me doubt myself and shattered my confidence.”
- “I feel violated and have needed company around me ever since.”
- “I still haven’t found my pet and the pain is raw—I’ve cried throughout my statement.”
- “The ordeal caused so much distress I couldn’t eat or sleep.”
Also Jailed for Heartless Wheelchair Theft
Woolveridge didn’t stop at blackmail. He was also convicted of stealing and wrecking a £2,000 wheelchair belonging to a vulnerable young girl. Her family couldn’t leave the house until a replacement was found.
Recorder Blakey slammed the act as “heartless,” condemning Woolveridge for exploiting vulnerable victims at every turn.
