Shock DNA Match Links Jozef Puska to Ashling Murphy Murder
In a dramatic twist at the trial of Jozef Puska, accused of murdering schoolteacher Ashling Murphy, forensic experts revealed damning DNA evidence. Male DNA found under Ashling’s fingernails matches Puska’s with staggering certainty — just a 1 in 14,000 chance it belongs to anyone else.
Forensic Breakthrough: Male DNA Snagged from Victim’s Nails
Dr. Lorna Flanagan from the Forensic Science Laboratory unveiled how she used a cutting-edge method called Y-STR profiling. This technique hones in on the male Y chromosome, filtering out female DNA — like a magnet pulling male DNA from a sea of female genetic material.
Despite Ashling’s nail scrapings mostly holding female DNA, Dr. Flanagan successfully extracted male-specific profiles from both hands. These profiles matched blood samples from Puska taken at St James’ Hospital and while in custody, sealing the forensic link.
Police Close in on Suspects, Clear Others
- Detective Sergeant David Scahill tracked movements of Puska’s brothers on the murder day. CCTV placed them far from the crime scene after 2 pm on January 12, 2022.
- Detective Superintendent Patrick O’Callaghan confirmed another suspect, initially arrested, has been released. His alibi was backed by family witnesses and his DNA didn’t match any evidence from the scene or victim.
Trial Rumbles On as Courtroom Awaits Verdict
The Ashling Murphy case remains at the forefront of public attention. With new forensic revelations and tireless police work, the trial continues to expose the tragic truth behind this shocking killing.
