A 72-year-old man has been convicted of stealing a Poppy Appeal charity box from a Sainsbury’s store in Lewisham.
Glenard Beaumont, of Auckland Hill, West Norwood, appeared at Croydon Crown Court on Monday, January 27, where he pleaded guilty to the theft.
The incident occurred on November 6, when Beaumont entered the store and stole the charity box, which had been collecting donations for the annual Poppy Appeal in support of veterans and their families.
Sentence and Compensation
Beaumont was handed a four-week prison sentence, suspended for one year. This means he will avoid serving time in custody unless he commits another offense or breaches the conditions of his sentence during the suspension period.
The court also ordered Beaumont to pay £100 in compensation, which will be deducted from his benefits.
