Blaze Breaks Out on Scrap Metal Ship at Avonmouth Dock
A major fire erupted onboard the RIJN Confidence, a scrap metal ship at Royal Edward Dock in Avonmouth, Bristol. Avon Fire and Rescue were called to the scene at 11:47am on Thursday after flames broke out in the ship’s cargo hold during loading.
Emergency Response Launches Swift Action
The crew immediately activated their firefighting protocols and alerted authorities. Thankfully, no injuries or casualties have been reported. A spokesperson from Hellas Confidence Ship Management confirmed all crew are safe and accounted for. They also assured that no pollution has been detected as a result of the fire.
Massive Firefighting Operation Underway
- 11 fire engines dispatched
- About 60 firefighters on site
- Specialist appliances including a turntable ladder and fire station boat involved
Teams from Bedminster fire station are helping to contain the blaze as crews battle to bring the fire under control.

Avon Fire and Rescue urged the public to avoid the area while they tackle the blaze. The situation remains under control with no escalation. Investigations are ongoing to pinpoint the fire’s cause.
