10 Fire Engines and 100 Responders Battled Fierce Blaze
On Monday 8 August 2016, firefighters, police, and paramedics rushed to tackle a blaze in a building packed with 400 tonnes of household waste. Around 150 tonnes were well alight at the peak.
The response was huge — ten fire engines, two aerial ladder platforms, and over 100 emergency personnel worked non-stop through the day, overnight, and into Tuesday, using 50 breathing apparatus sets, eight jets, and the powerful ladder monitors.
Fire Finally Out After Waste Removal Operation
Firefighters finally brought the inferno under control by 1:44pm on Tuesday 9 August, after removing more than 100 tonnes of burning rubbish. The remaining waste will be closely watched in case of flare-ups.
No Injuries, Precautionary Measures Lifted
Thankfully, no one was hurt in the fire. Residents near the smoke plume were advised to keep doors and windows shut as a precaution — advice now lifted.
Staff have now begun a full-scale clean-up at the site.
