Teen Charged Over Deadly English Channel Boat Capsize
A 19-year-old teenager has been charged over a tragic boat capsizing in the English Channel that killed four people. The young man, known only as Bah and with no fixed address, appeared impassively at Folkestone Magistrates’ Court today wearing a navy puffer jacket.
Boat Overloaded with Migrants
Deputy District Judge Nicola Fleck remanded Bah in custody after charging him with piloting a vessel that facilitated an immigration breach by multiple non-UK nationals. The boat carried between 43 and 48 passengers, most believed to be asylum seekers.
The hearing was delayed for hours after the wrong-language interpreter showed up, causing frustration in court.
Four Dead, Major Rescue Launched
The disaster unfolded in the early hours of December 14, when reports of a boat in distress triggered a massive rescue involving the Royal Navy, French navy, RNLI lifeboats, Coastguard, ambulance services, and police along the Kent coast.
- Four people died, including a teenager.
- 39 others were rescued safely.
Detectives from Kent and Essex’s Serious Crime Directorate and the National Crime Agency are investigating the tragic deaths.
Police Move Fast to Charge Suspect
A man was arrested last Friday in connection with the incident. By Sunday, Kent Police confirmed the Crown Prosecution Service had authorised a charge against Bah for knowingly facilitating the attempted arrival of asylum seekers.
Officers continue working to identify the deceased and notify their families.
