£9 Million Derbyshire Investment Fraud Duo Jailed
Two Derbyshire men are behind bars after running a £9 million investment scam that fooled family and friends over six years. Andrew Bird, 60, from Quarndon, and Christopher Walton, 67, from Kilburn, were convicted of fraud by false representation and unlicensed financial activities.
Trust Betrayed: How the Scam Worked
Between 2016 and 2022, Bird and Walton persuaded their victims to invest in fake or risky financial ventures. Using their close personal ties, they won over family and friends with promises of huge returns. Instead, they drained millions from those who trusted them most.
Heavy Jail Terms and Crushing Losses
- Andrew Bird sentenced to eight years in prison
- Christopher Walton locked up for seven years
The court slammed their “calculated and callous” scheme that inflicted severe financial and emotional damage. Judge Eleanor Turner said the pair’s lies destroyed not just money, but trust and peace of mind.
“I trusted them completely, and they took everything I had saved for my retirement,” said one anonymous victim.
Authorities Strike Back
The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) played a vital role, teaming up with police to crack the case wide open. Prosecutor Mark Harris revealed how the fraudsters operated without proper authorisation, exploiting long-standing relationships to carry out their scam.
Detective Inspector Sarah Collins warned others: “This case highlights the devastating impact of investment fraud. We hope these jail sentences deter anyone tempted to follow the same path.”
Both men must pay back some of the stolen cash under the Proceeds of Crime Act — though much of the £9 million may be lost forever.
Warning to the Public
The FCA urges everyone to stay alert and only invest through authorised, regulated channels to avoid falling prey to similar frauds.
If you suspect you’ve been targeted by investment fraud, report it immediately to the FCA or local police.
