Lorry Driver Jailed After Nearly Killing Two Police Officers on A1
John Wickson, 55, has been slapped with a 16-month jail sentence for a reckless stunt that nearly cost two police officers their lives. The heart-stopping drama unfolded on the A1 when Wickson smashed into a patrol car and then sped off, leaving officers scrambling for safety.
Officers Forced to Dive for Safety
The terrifying incident happened on the night of October 26, 2017, near North Muskham. Police were dealing with an oil spill and had their patrol car blocking the first lane on a flyover bridge to stop northbound traffic.
As the officers set out cones and returned to their vehicle, Wickson’s HGV thundered towards them. In a split second, the officers jumped over a safety barrier to avoid being crushed. Despite their quick thinking, Wickson’s lorry smashed into the patrol car, showering them with glass and debris.
Wickson Flees, But Justice Catches Up
Rather than stop, Wickson carried on driving for more than eight miles, ignoring the chaos he caused. It wasn’t until months later that South Yorkshire Police arrested him during an unrelated incident in Sheffield.
Wickson initially faced court but skipped his sentencing at Nottingham Crown Court, forcing police to issue a warrant. Luckily, he was brought back to face justice.
Officer Speaks Out on Dangerous Driving
“The standard of driving displayed by Wickson that night was appalling. Thankfully we were able to take evasive action, but with a moment’s indecision, the outcome could have been very different,” said Sergeant Rob Harrison, one of the officers involved.
