Maidstone Man Charged After Attempting to Bite Police Officers
A Maidstone man has been charged after allegedly trying to bite and kick police officers during a tense early morning arrest. New laws protecting emergency workers were put to the test in this fiery encounter.
Officers Targeted During Knightrider Street Arrest
Kent Police rushed to a disturbance on Knightrider Street at around 3.30am on Sunday, 19 May 2019. As officers arrested Jack Smith, 40, suspected of breaching the peace, he reportedly launched threats and violent attacks against them.
Two Counts of Assault on Emergency Worker
Smith was held and charged with two counts of assault by beating of an emergency worker. He has been bailed and is set to appear at Maidstone Magistrates’ Court on 21 June.
New Law Backs Emergency Workers
The Assaults on Emergency Workers Act 2018, which came into force in November last year, created tougher penalties for crimes against police, paramedics, nurses, and other blue light staff. This case marks one of the early prosecutions under the new legislation.
