Man Jailed for Killing 13-Year-Old in Croxteth Road Smash

A 36-year-old man has been handed a 12-month prison sentence after a tragic road collision in Croxteth that claimed the life of a 13-year-old boy.

Tragic Crash on East Lancashire Road

On the evening of Wednesday 7 December 2022, emergency services rushed to East Lancashire Road near Stonedale Retail Park following reports of a child hit by a silver Vauxhall Astra. The young pedestrian, Harry Kinney-Ryan, had just bought sweets from a nearby petrol station when the devastating accident occurred.

Harry battled for his life in hospital but sadly passed away two days later on 9 December.

Driver Pleads Guilty and Sentenced

The car’s driver, Craig Griffiths of Frinstead Road, Norris Green, remained at the scene and was charged with causing death by careless driving. Last month, Griffiths pleaded guilty at Liverpool Crown Court. Today, he was sentenced to 12 months behind bars and banned from driving for a year.

Heartfelt Police Statement

“Our sincere condolences remain with Harry’s family,” said Detective Sergeant Andy Roper of Merseyside Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit.

“This is an extremely sad case with devastating consequences for Harry’s family, friends, and Griffiths’ own family. I want to thank the members of the public who stopped to help and give first aid, allowing Harry’s loved ones precious time with him in hospital.

“I hope today’s sentence helps Harry’s family begin to heal after more than 18 months of heartbreak. Our thoughts remain with them.”

The Facts Behind the Crash

Police investigations revealed Griffiths was driving between 53 and 58 mph before the collision. Detective Sergeant Roper warned all drivers:

  • “We are all accountable for our driving choices.”
  • “Speeding can destroy lives.”
  • “Merseyside Police will not tolerate reckless drivers.”
  • “Together, we must work to make our roads safer and reduce fatalities.”

The force is committed to its Vision Zero strategy aimed at cutting road deaths and serious injuries across the region.
