Dozens of children were targeted in a pepper spray incident, with at least 12 needing hospital treatment in western Germany.

The alarm was raised after unknown attackers released pepper spray at a primary school in Hürth, North Rhine-Westphalia outside Cologne.
Twelve children were taken to the hospital, while seven youngsters were treated at the scene by paramedics.

The fire department declared a mass casualty incident, according to the German daily Westdeutsche Zeitung.
