Drunk Driver’s Deadly Crash Claims Mum of Two on A66

Amy Purvis, 36, was driving home to Richmond from Barnard Castle on the night of December 14 when disaster struck. A Nissan X-Trail veered into her lane on the A66, smashing into her car head-on.

Amy was rushed to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough with serious injuries but tragically died two days later. Her organs were donated to save others.

Other Driver Found Dead at Scene with Massive Drunk Driving Charge

The driver of the Nissan, a 58-year-old man, died immediately at the crash scene. An inquest held May 24 at Crook Coroners’ Court revealed he had a blood alcohol reading of 203mg per 100ml — more than double the UK legal limit.

Further investigations showed he never held a valid licence due to epilepsy and had ignored his medication, which could have controlled his condition.

Coroner’s Verdict and Family’s Heartfelt Plea

Senior Coroner Dr Leslie Hamilton ruled the deaths as caused by a road traffic collision.

“We continue to miss Amy every day but hope that her unnecessary death will act as a deterrent to anyone who thinks that driving under the influence of alcohol is ever acceptable,” Amy’s family said.

“We also thank the emergency services, Durham Constabulary, hospital staff, and kind members of the public who gave Amy comfort at the scene. Your kindness means the world to us.”

Police Warn: Drink Driving Shatters Lives

Inspector Mick Todd of Durham Constabulary added: “This was a truly tragic incident. Our thoughts are with the families at this difficult time.

“This terrible tragedy is a stark warning about the devastating consequences of drink driving. It can take lives and shatter families – please, don’t.”
