Tragic Toddler’s Mysterious Death on Greek Holiday
A three-year-old boy from Dagenham, Ahsanul Hoque Izyan, tragically died while on family holiday in Greece. Despite a UK post-mortem now underway, the cause of death remains unknown after significant delays.
Little Boy Drowns on Family Trip
Ahsanul, from Lewis Way, Dagenham, is believed to have drowned on April 13. Coroner’s officer Jean Smyth told East London Coroner’s Court the toddler “slipped away unnoticed by adults” and was later found unresponsive in a swimming pool. So far, UK authorities have not received any official records from the Greek investigation.
Delayed Autopsy Sparks Serious Concerns
A May 15 hearing revealed that the post-mortem was stalled due to a shortage of specialist paediatric pathologists in the UK. Senior coroner Graeme Irvine warned delays might compromise crucial forensic evidence. He publicly criticised a staff member from Dagenham and Rainham MP Margaret Mullane’s office for meddling with coronial procedures.
The post-mortem finally took place, but doctors have yet to pinpoint a cause of death, awaiting further histology results.
Inquest Set Amid Calls for Transparency
At a May 22 hearing, coroner Nadia Persaud confirmed the death requires an official inquest—an essential step to explore unexplained deaths and prevent future tragedies.
Coroner Persaud requested more information from Ahsanul’s family about his background and the events leading to his death. She will seek help from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) to obtain key documents including:
- Greek police investigation statements
- The official Greek post-mortem report
- Findings from the Greek authorities’ investigation
The final inquest is scheduled for December 3, 2025.
