Tragic Baby Death After Being Left on Play Mat

A heartbreaking inquest in Devon has revealed that four-month-old Leonidas Ramsden suffocated after being left on a play mat while his parents slept. The tragedy unfolded at the family home in Buckfastleigh on April 28, 2022.

Leonidas’s father, Dudley, put him on the mat and dozed off on the sofa. Three hours later, at around 6:00 AM, Leonidas’s mother, 21-year-old Akita Ramsden, found him face down and unresponsive.

Parents Heartbroken: “He Just Slipped Away”

Akita spoke of her devastation during a memorial fundraiser last year. She said:

“Our son Leonidas-Aurelius was four months and three days old when he rolled over in the middle of the night while his family slept. He didn’t cry… he didn’t wake up… he just slipped away in his sleep with a small, sweet smile on his face.”

She added,

“Leo had the most beautiful low tones to his voice and loved to coo and roar. He was always smiling and holding his head high. Four months and three days of showering him in love and kisses were the best moments of my life.”

Akita revealed she had asked Dudley to move Leonidas to his Moses basket around 3:00 AM because she felt unwell. Dudley, not wanting to disturb the baby, left him on the mat instead.

Safety Warning: Play Mat Not Designed for Sleep

The inquest heard the mat was marketed as a “play mat” but looked like a soft sleeping pod. It carried safety warnings against leaving children unattended. Coroner Alison Longhorn concluded Leonidas likely suffocated because he couldn’t breathe freely after rolling into a face-down position.

Products like sleeping pods, which are soft and lack safety straps, have been linked to higher Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) risks. In 2017, major UK retailers such as Tesco, Mothercare, and Boots banned sleeping pods due to these concerns. Yet, they remain widely available online.

The Lullaby Trust, a leading children’s charity, warns:

“Sleeping a baby on anything but a firm, flat surface, or using soft, heavy bedding, can increase the risk of SIDS. Products such as cushioned sleeping pods, nests, baby hammocks, and cot bumpers pose risks to infants under 12 months.”

Expert Advice on Safe Infant Sleep

  • Always place infants on their backs to sleep.
  • Use a firm, flat surface like a crib with a fitted sheet.
  • Avoid loose bedding, pillows, or padded bumpers.
  • Move babies from inclined or upright spots to a safe sleep environment.

The post-mortem couldn’t pinpoint an exact cause of death, but the coroner officially recorded that Leonidas died after being found face down on the mat.

Calls for Greater Awareness and Safer Baby Products

This tragic loss has reignited urgent calls for better public awareness around infant sleep safety and stricter rules on baby products marketed as safe for sleep. The Ramsden family’s heartache is a stark reminder to follow safety guidelines—even when exhausted—to protect our most vulnerable.
