Dad Found Guilty of Murder After Baby Dies from Horrific Injuries
A 21-year-old dad from Broadstairs has been convicted of murdering his six-week-old son, McKenzie Ellis. The tiny tot was rushed to hospital on 23 July 2018 after Lee Vernon called paramedics, claiming his baby was struggling to breathe and unresponsive.
Shocking Injuries and Changing Stories
Vernon, who has no fixed address, initially said the baby was unconscious when he picked him up to change his nappy and claimed he didn’t know why. When asked if McKenzie had hurt himself, Vernon replied, “No, not really.” Paramedics arrived around 7:30am, where Vernon admitted his son had hit his face on his shoulder the day before.
McKenzie was found to have severe head trauma and broken bones. He was quickly transferred to a specialist hospital. Medical experts revealed the baby had suffered multiple injuries, including a brain injury, some inflicted on at least two previous occasions.
Attempted Cover-Up Fails as Truth Emerges
During a police interview, Vernon changed his story, claiming McKenzie had accidentally fallen from his grip that morning during a feed, hitting a sofa arm before falling to the floor. Vernon said he was too scared to tell his partner the truth. Tragically, little McKenzie died from his injuries just three days later, on 26 July 2018.
Officers discovered Vernon’s phone contained internet searches about other parents harming their babies, suggesting premeditation. Despite this, he denied any prior incidents beyond what he had disclosed.
Justice Served: Guilty Verdict and Awaiting Sentence
Vernon was charged with murder and two counts of grievous bodily harm with intent. He was found guilty by a jury at Maidstone Crown Court on 24 October 2019. Sentencing is scheduled for 29 November.
Detective Chief Inspector Richard Vickery said: “It’s impossible to comprehend the suffering that McKenzie endured during his short life at the hands of his father. Vernon has shown himself to be a cruel and cowardly man after hurting his helpless baby who looked to him for love and care. I’m so grateful to the medical experts and my investigation team who, despite this complex and emotional case, were able to get to the truth to ensure Vernon’s conviction.”
