Tragedy in Weymouth: Two Firms Plead Guilty Over Girl’s Lift Death

Two companies have admitted guilt after a Health and Safety Executive (HSE) probe into the heartbreaking death of five-year-old Alexys Brown. The little girl was fatally trapped in a faulty lift at her Weymouth home.

Fatal Lift Incident in 2015

On August 13, 2015, Alexys climbed into the home lift and poked her head through a broken vision panel. As the lift rose, her head became trapped between the lift and the ground floor ceiling. Tragically, she later died from her injuries.

Companies Charged and Guilty Pleas Made

Today, Thursday 23 August 2018, Synergy Housing Limited of Poole and Orona Limited of Sheffield both pleaded guilty to breaching Section 3(1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. A third company, Aster Property Ltd, had charges ordered to lie on file.

The duo face sentencing at Bournemouth Crown Court on 14-15 January 2019.

HSE Responds

“HSE acknowledges today’s guilty pleas but will not make a further comment until after sentencing,” a spokesperson said.
