Burglar Caught After Woman Wakes to Intruder in Abbey Wood Home

A woman in Abbey Wood was left shaken and traumatised after waking to find a burglar inside her house. Reuben Lloyd Johnson, 31, has now been jailed for the break-in that happened last year on Rushdene.

Victim Left Fearful and Anxious

The victim told the court how the burglary left her terrified and anxious. Prosecutor Jade Sodipo shared a victim impact statement revealing the emotional toll. The woman described feeling fear, shame, and helplessness, with everyday tasks now daunting and stressful.

“Simple things she once took for granted now fill her with dread,” said Sodipo.

Series of Burglaries Before Arrest

Johnson wasn’t a one-time offender. Just over a week before the Abbey Wood break-in, on April 29 last year, he tried to break into three homes on Tanhurst Walk. Neighbours spotted him on CCTV and alerted residents, stopping him in his tracks.

He continued his crime spree with further burglaries in Reading before his eventual arrest. The court heard Johnson was under the influence of crack cocaine and was committing burglaries to fund his addiction.

Background and Sentencing

In court, it emerged Johnson had a troubled past, including neurological issues and a traumatic childhood marked by addiction and serious head injury. At Woolwich Crown Court on May 9, 2024, he pleaded guilty to four counts of attempted burglary and one count of burglary in Abbey Wood.

Judge Nicholas Heathcote Williams described Johnson as “pleasant but disinhibited” but highlighted the seriousness of his repeated offences.

Johnson was handed an 8-month prison term on top of the two years and four months he was already serving.

Justice Served, But Trauma Remains

The sentencing brings relief to the victim but highlights the lasting scars burglary leaves on individuals and communities alike.
