Trailer Thief Jailed After CCTV Snags Him in Northumberland
Jamie Cliff, 29, has been slammed behind bars for a year after he was caught red-handed on CCTV near the scene of a £1,200 livestock trailer theft.
Rural Crime Team Cracks Down Fast
The trailer vanished from a farm track in Northumberland between the night of February 14 and early hours of February 15. Quickly on the case, Northumbria Police’s Rural Crime Team zeroed in on a suspicious vehicle spotted nearby at the time.
That car was linked to an associate of Cliff, who was swiftly arrested in the Durham area.
CCTV Evidence Blows Cliff’s Denial Out of the Water
Despite denying any involvement, CCTV footage told a different story. It captured Cliff stepping out of the car at a petrol station moments before the trailer went missing. The same car was later filmed towing the stolen trailer—stripped of registration plates—along public roads and into a car park.
Justice Served at Bedlington Magistrates
The day after his arrest, Cliff faced magistrates in Bedlington, owned up to the theft, and was promptly sentenced to 12 months behind bars. Cliff, from Melrose Drive, West Auckland, County Durham, got what the police called “a strong message” on April 14.
“We are very pleased that the offender has admitted his part in the theft,” said Inspector Garry Neill of Northumbria Police. “The investigation by our Rural Crime Team and CID has been an excellent team effort and shows how seriously we take rural crime.”
“These crimes hit victims, families, and communities hard. We’re committed to stopping offenders and urge the public to stay vigilant.”
“If you see suspicious activity, please report it.”
