People Smuggler Nabbed at Luton Airport
Romanian national Vasile Costache, 53, was arrested by National Crime Agency (NCA) officers at Luton Airport on Monday 27 September. He was about to board a flight back to Bucharest.
Link to 2019 Migrant Van Horror
Costache’s arrest ties back to a shocking 2019 bust. In June that year, Dutch police stopped a British-registered Mercedes van near Breda, working alongside the NCA. Inside, they found 17 migrants hidden in wooden compartments behind a wall of tyres. Among them were five children aged 5 to 14 and a pregnant woman.
Final Piece in the People-Smuggling Puzzle
Costache is accused of helping organise the desperate attempt to sneak migrants into the UK. He was reportedly due to meet the group when they arrived in Harwich on a ferry from the Netherlands.
“We are determined to do all we can to dismantle the ruthless criminality behind people smuggling, which brings misery to so many individuals,” said NCA spokespeople.
With Costache’s arrest, all suspects involved in this complex smuggling ring now face charges—a major win for UK law enforcement.
