Horrific Discovery at Billericay Animal Rescue Centre
A shocking police raid at an animal rescue centre in Billericay uncovered the bodies of 37 dead dogs and led to the rescue of 20 live dogs. Essex Police, the RSPCA, and Basildon Borough Council launched the operation following a flood of reports filed through Action Fraud.
Two Men Arrested as Investigation Gathers Pace
The joint raid, which took place in the Crays Hill area on Tuesday 13 May, saw two men arrested on suspicion of fraud and failing to prevent unnecessary suffering to animals. Both suspects remain in custody as the investigation continues.
Inspector Steve Parry of Basildon’s neighbourhood policing said: “As a result of a number of reports relating to dogs, our officers worked with the RSPCA and Basildon Council to compile evidence, leading to the joint visit yesterday. We believe we’ve found the remains of 37 dogs and seized around 20 live dogs that are now being cared for.”
Council and RSPCA Respond to Disturbing Find
Council officials urged the public to avoid speculation while the investigation unfolds. Basildon Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment & Leisure, Cllr Aidan McGurran, said:
“This is an ongoing police investigation and I would urge residents to refrain from speculating. We are working closely with the Police and RSPCA and will provide updates when we can.”
Council Leader Gavin Callaghan called the scene “deeply distressing” and thanked officers for their professionalism amid the “incredibly difficult” circumstances.
The RSPCA confirmed that several ill and dead dogs were discovered during the operation, with assistance from Dogs Trust. A spokesperson added:
“Sadly a number of ill and deceased dogs were found at the property. As this is an ongoing enquiry, we are unable to release further information at this time.”
Long Road Ahead for Justice
Authorities say the probe into suspected animal cruelty and fraud will be complex and wide-ranging. A heavy police presence remains in the Crays Hill area as detectives continue digging for answers. Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
