Counter-terror police have swooped after a black Suzuki Swift ploughed into a crowd in Derby city centre, leaving seven people injured, some seriously.
Black Suzuki Swift Mows Down Pedestrians in Derby
The terrifying smash happened just before 9.30pm on Saturday in busy Friar Gate. Witnesses described “screaming and people sprawled across the road” as the car barreled into them.
Emergency crews rushed seven victims to Royal Derby Hospital and Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham. A man in his 30s, originally from India, was arrested at the scene. He now faces charges including attempted murder and dangerous driving.
“Horrific Incident” Shakes Derby’s Nightlife
Chief Superintendent Emma Aldred said: “While none of those injured have life-threatening injuries, the impact is just beginning to be felt. The public showed remarkable bravery offering first aid immediately after the crash. We believe this is an isolated incident with no wider danger to the public.”
Though counter-terror teams have joined the probe, police insist this crash is not automatically treated as terrorism. Derbyshire Police said: “Detectives are working closely with counter-terror teams as part of standard procedure. We are keeping an open mind regarding motives.”
Local Witness Recalls Chaotic Scene
Blake Pierce, 21, was out with friends when horror erupted. “We heard screaming and saw about six people sprawled across the road and footpaths. Everyone just froze,” he said.
“Bystanders rushed in to help before emergency services arrived fast. I always thought Derby was a safe night out. This was a real shock.”
Police have confirmed no one died despite false rumours flying on social media.
Community Calls for Calm and Unity
Derby City Council leader Nadine Peatfield expressed her shock: “My thoughts are with those injured and everyone who witnessed this distressing event. We urge anyone with information to contact the police immediately.”
Locals echoed the call for peace. One resident posted, “May those injured recover swiftly. We need peace, not hate.”
Investigation Underway – Police Seek Witnesses
The crash site on Friar Gate was sealed off overnight but reopened Sunday afternoon. Police urge anyone who saw the black Suzuki Swift around the time to come forward.
Businesses have reopened and residents have returned to their homes following the cordon lift.
