Rescue Heroes Find Missing 82-Year-Old George After 600 Hours of Tireless Searching

After nearly 600 hours and 51 volunteers combed the countryside, George Bassett, 82, has been found safe. The elderly dementia patient was discovered near his Nomansland home and rushed to hospital, where he is now recovering well.

Family’s Relief After Heart-Stopping Ordeal

George’s wife, Pamela Bassett, spoke of her gratitude on her 81st birthday. “Knowing you were out looking for him gave me the strength to carry on,” she said. “I am so grateful to you all and feel like this is my lucky day.”

The couple has lived in Nomansland, near Landford and the New Forest, for 50 years. George has always been a keen walker, making his disappearance on Tuesday 18th July all the more worrying.

Massive Search Effort Brings Him Home

Wiltshire Police called in expert volunteers from Wiltshire Search and Rescue, plus neighbouring teams including Hampshire and Dorset Search and Rescue and their dog units. Together, they battled thunder, lightning, and torrential rain to scour fields, crops, and woodland.

Adrian Sawyer, Chair of Wiltshire Search and Rescue, praised the collaboration: “We are really pleased with the outcome. It was absolutely worth the lost sleep and miles walked to bring George safely home.”

Trained Volunteers Save the Day

The search was tightly coordinated using police drones and helicopters, with volunteers quick to follow up every lead. Wiltshire Search and Rescue is a volunteer force funded by donations, giving thousands of hours to the community each year.

“Our volunteers come from all walks of life,” said Adrian. “We unite to be there when people need us most.”
