Fake Cop Scams Seniors Out of Thousands in Bolton
Police in Bolton are hunting a scammer who’s been ringing up vulnerable pensioners, pretending to be a detective from Greater Manchester Police. Since April 4, five incidents have been reported, with detectives warning there could be more yet to come forward.
How the Con Works
- The crook calls from a withheld number, claiming to be investigating bank fraud.
- He tells victims to withdraw large sums of cash—anywhere from £2,000 up to £70,000.
- A “colleague” then turns up to collect the money, often described as wearing tracksuit bottoms and a hoody.
So far, the scam targets have mostly been elderly residents from Little Lever, Horwich, and Westhoughton — all aged in their 70s and 80s.
Two Victims Lose Over £6,000
Tragically, two victims have handed over cash, with the largest haul taken exceeding £6,000.
Police believe one young man is behind the string of scams, deliberately targeting those he sees as easy prey.
Police Warn Public — Be Vigilant!
“Impersonating a police officer is illegal,” said Detective Chief Inspector Dean Purtill of Bolton district. “But doing it to scam innocent people out of their savings is shocking. We’re working hard to catch this offender and we urge anyone who thinks they’ve been targeted to come forward.”
“No police officer would ever ask you to withdraw cash or hand it over. Always ask for ID and call 101 if unsure, or 999 in an emergency.”
