Tragedy Strikes at Brixton Gig: Rebecca Ikumelo Dead, Several Injured
Rebecca Ikumelo, 33, from Newham, east London, died on Saturday morning after a deadly crowd crush at a South London concert. Two other women, aged 21 and 23, remain critically ill in hospital following the chaotic event.
Night of Horror at Afrobeat Show
The nightmare unfolded on Thursday night at the Brixton O2 Academy, where Nigerian Afrobeat star Asake was performing. Police were called amid reports of “a large number of people attempting to force entry” to the venue. Eight people were rushed to hospital with injuries after a frantic crowd surge.
Asake was forced to cut short his performance after just three songs. In a heartfelt statement, he said his “heart is with those who were injured.” After learning of Rebecca’s death, the rising star took to Instagram expressing devastation.
“I am overcome with grief and could never have imagined this happening,” he wrote. “My team and I are still awaiting the full debrief from venue management and police to determine exactly what led to the disruption and Rebecca’s passing. If you have any information, please contact the Metropolitan Police.”
Police Launch Urgent Investigation
The Met Police say their probe is “painstaking and forensic,” reviewing huge amounts of footage from social media and bodycams. Chief Superintendent Colin Wingrove vowed to carry on until the full picture is uncovered.
“We are determined to do everything we can to establish exactly what happened on Thursday night. Rebecca’s family and all those affected remain in my thoughts and prayers,” he said.
MP Demands Answers on Security Failures
Labour MP Florence Eshalomi, representing Vauxhall, slammed the venue’s ticketing and security measures, calling the incident “deeply concerning.”
“It is very clear ticketing and security did not perform as they should for this to happen,” Eshalomi said. “We need answers about how this occurred and what will be done to prevent it happening again.”
Eshalomi visited the venue on Saturday morning and confirmed the incident has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct, which is reviewing the footage.
Promising Artist Cast Into Tragedy
Asake, real name Ahmed Ololade, was recently nominated for BBC Radio 1’s Sound of 2023 award, spotlighting the UK’s top emerging talent. What should have been a celebration of new music has been overshadowed by heartbreak and loss.
